Christopher Columbus (1451-May 20, 1506) was an Italian navigator and explorer credited with the discovery of the Americas. A man of great leadership and courage, he often used "converting non-believers" as a reason for his explorations.

Christopher Columbus believed that instead of sailing east on the path to find India that land could be reached in just weeks by sailing west! His voyages across the Atlantic Ocean began an effort at exploration and colonization of the Western Hemisphere. After securing the support of Queen Isabella of Spain, he finally set sail for the new world. After three weeks of sailing and no sight of land, his crew threatened mutiny. But at the moment when all seemed lost, land was discovered!

  • Christopher Columbus was an Indian killer who slaughtered natives in search of gold and routes and items for trade. How is that a hero? He wasn't even the first one to discover America.

  • Icelander Leif Eiriksson discovered America 500 years before Columbus.

    He named it Vinland.

  • @Cobra2323 well, Washington was a Slave-Owner himself. If we apply modernday Measures of Behaviour, than there would hardly be any historical figures left, that we could praise for anything.

  • @adalstef He may have found it, but that information became lost. Christopher Columbus rediscovered it and it was his discovery that led to the civilizing of the Americas.

  • the indians discovered America. :->

  • @Eliemet1979 Faith has nothing to do with belief the world is round. The ancient Greeks knew this 2000 years earlier.

  • @adalstef Leif was not icelander. He was Norwegian. His father, Eirik the Red was banded from Norway cuz of his brutality. Erik sailed to Iceland, but he was soon banded from Iceland as well. So he sailed out to the unknown sea, West, with his family. He came to Greenland and there he stayed (and was not banded because he was the only person there). His son, Leif then started his own trip to sail fether West and found America/Vinland, but left shortly, as he was not impressed by the new land.

  • Columbus didnt want to explore land unknown to the Europeans at the time. His mission was to find a trading route to India supplied by the financial aid of the Queen and King Spain. Sure the Vikings were most likely the first to land in North America, but they have no influence on American culture because the Vikings didnt settled in what is now America. Plus Columbus was a terrible man who believed in slavery and was brutal to the native people of the lands he landed on. Just look it up.

  • i love it r.a

  • The Viking kingdom is dead and any knowledge they had of the new world is dead because it wasn't spread abroad. Well Columbus discovered America and the world heard. Columbus was a holy man who believed by the word and power of god that the earth was round he had no idea he'd discover america he just knew by faith the earth was round :) Sounds like he got a extra blessing for his faith :)

  • Christopher Columbus was portuguese.
