Bethel, Maine decided to hold an annual Wife Carrying Championship after one of the town fathers saw pictures of the original festival in Finland. The winner gets the wifes weight in Beer. Is that politically correct? It turned out to be a real togetherness activity for the couples.
This is one in a series of "SmallTown American Celebrations" telling the stories of small towns that celebrate their lives and identities in seemingly silly and frivolous ways; in fact, they are an expression of their own unique identity. Celebrants compete in contests for little reward other than the fun of having done it.
