During the depression the WPA writers program was able to capture the oral history of former slaves throughout the country. Some of the more important and rare interviews involve the Freedmen of Indian Territory.
During the conference held in Tulsa, Oklahoma during February of 2010, I attempted to get some of the attendees to read from the pages of the Pioneer Papers to bring to life the voices of former Choctaw and Chickasaw slaves and their descendants.
One person who responded to my call was Mr. Verdie TRIPLETT a Choctaw and Chickasaw Freedmen Descendant and I am forever grateful that he agreed to become a part of an ongoing project that will record and publish these important documents for the public to become more aware of the unique history of Indian Territory Freedmen of the Five Slave Holding Tribes.
