In his last years, Steinitz performs beyond expectations at Nurnberg 1896. He undergoes naturopathic therapy in preparation for his rematch with Emanuel Lasker, but to no avail. He is committed to an insane asylum in Moscow, and the world press reports that he has died. He hasn't. In fact, Steinitz rebounds to put in his last strong tournament performances, finishing fourth at Vienna 1898 and fifth at Koln 1898. However, his final tournament in London is disastrous, and upon his return home to New York, he descends into madness- and death.

  • Your tribute to Wilhelm Steinitz is purely magnificent !! Wilhelm Steinitz lived a life of great victory and at the same time tragedy like Booby Fischer. Paul Morphy, the greatest chess master of all also suffered a mental issue after the civil war. God bless them all!
