John is John Sparkman, who was Stevenson's VP candidate in 1952. Dean is Dean Gooderham Acheson, who was Truman's Sec. of State. Harry is of course Harry Truman, who was very unpopular by the end of his term in 1952, and that was the reason he chose not to run against Eisenhower. You can see the resemblance to these men in the donkey caricatures.

Interesting that the lyrics with the 3 donkeys had to say John, Dean, or Harry, instead of Tom, Dick, or Harry, because singing Tom and Dick would make listeners think of Dewey and Nixon, who were Republicans.
