Sentinels of the Coast

The ocean provides us with benefits such as transportation, food, and recreation. Our economy depends on the ocean. Unfortunately, coastal storms can raise water levels, causing flooding, loss of life, or property damage. In addition, the equipment used to collect data for flooding forecasts and evacuations can be destroyed during severe storms. In response, NOAA created the Sentinels of the Coast. These tall structures in the ocean that can withstand hurricanes, providing a safe haven for the instruments that collect critical data during severe storms to support preparation and emergency response.
