  • The problem with music is that you have to dig deep to find anything good. The radio doesn't play anything that it would take brains to understand, so it's almost a necessity to turn to the Internet for help.

I have a question for you though: do you know when the transition happened and why? I mean, why did music go from something that takes creativity and intelligence to make, to something that's only there for profit, and possibly for sex appeal in the case of people like Nicki Minaj?

  • @Cereghini i think i do. for rap, it happened around 1997, when 2Pac, and Biggie died, and Puff Daddy decided to start getting on the mike and rap instead of just producing, and then when Cash Money rappers got big in '99, that's when rap started getting commerical. And then in the early 2000's when crunk music took over with Lil' Jon, and then when most Atlanta rappers started getting promoted, and this craze of dance music, like the snap and "You're A Jerk", emerged.

  • @Cereghini And as for R & B, simple, it happened at the emergence of boy groups like B2K, and when they started making these hip hop dance movies (Step Up, Stomp The Yard, You Got Served, etc.). But it was really in 2005, when T-Pain first burst on the scene with his use of auto-tune, and then that's when everyone jumped on the auto-tune wagon, and R & B took a turn for the absolute worst, so i think you should blame T-Pain for most of the music you hear today.

  • @Cereghini Going back to hip hop, even in the early 90's you had commercial acts like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, pretty much at the time when rap started to become acceptable on radio stations, people you couldn't take seriously and Gerardo, who sang the song, "Rico Suave", but it was stiill mostly good, and real. But i think is mostly Diddy to blame for the downfall of mainstream hiip hop.

  • No dance craze? What about the shuffle?

I'm not a big hip hop or rap fan myself, and it seems just as annoying to me as it was a couple years ago. However, you do make good points, I'm also tired of auto-tune and all this fake crap.

  • @lamareikan666 that's "Party Rock Anthem" and that song is pop. doesn't really count even if shuffling is a hip hop dance.

  • The early 2000's imo was really the start of the downfall of rap/hip-hop. I love the 90's rap. Its the only rap I can enjoy. You didn't see NAS or Tupac talking about idiotic BS like "Omg look how much money I have, bitchez, flashy bullshit, idiotic dances" Music as a whole is awful. Alternative Rock is still good though (for the most part) RNB has gotten very generic but I agree R. Kelly is still good.

  • It's hard to like hip-hop after 2001 - cuz its not hip hop if its likely playing on mainstreams top40 and/or radio! good stuff!

  • @jellonful \m/ Randy Rhoads and DIO would approve! \m/ -Rubeer

  • And that's why I listen to metal.

  • I didn't pay attention to music alot in this year.

I had a friend in first and second grade (God I feel old now...) who liked the early Puff Daddy, but even at that time I never really saw the appeal. I think I've told you before that I can appreciate the poetics of rap, and especially if there's a good story behind it, and that's why I like early Eminem, but sooner than later it became about money rather than the story, which is a real shame because music can be a good way of getting stuff off your chest.

  • Nicki Minaj use to be butch as hell...lol. You really need to check her before and after pictures, music too.

They comparing MB to B2K...lol. I listen to some rap some...but I'm listening to more and more hip-hop. Overall...it's gotten worse. They're calling people like Wayne, Drake, and anyone else out right now hip-hop, which they aren't, they are pop-rap garbage.
