A 3-D model of the Helix Nebula shows a structure much more complex than suspected. The Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula, created when gas is expelled by a dying, Sun-sized star. The star becomes a white dwarf -- look for it in the center of the Helix.

  • I've always wondered do nebulae really have all those pretty colors that the telescopes capture? Or is it digitally enhanced? Like if you were to be flying around in space and saw a nebula would it look all green or red.. ?

  • @msmachima If you go to HubbleSite, the Behind the Pictures page in Gallery explains the process in detail.

  • @msmachima They're false colored depending on the specturm we view them in usually. I dunno if this is the actual color....

  • just so people know the colours are added artificially, the hobble cameras are black and white. The stars are not really coloured the way they show them in the photos

  • beyond words

  • The Helix Nebula. This is truly beautiful. Quite stunning and amazing.

  • Gracias por las imagenes son realmente expectáculares

  • Neat! You can really see the spherical shape, but it does look more like the Ring Nebula M57.

  • i'm sorry, but this is not a realistic 3D model of the Helix nebula. either the "artist" got it all wrong, or the ones who "computed" the position of dust and gas particles around the central wd star have no understanding whatsoever of the physics involved in an explosion such as those creating pl-nebs. i'll give this a definite "thumbs down" for lack of imagination ;) nice try, though...

  • Started to look like the Doomsday Machine from classic Trek as it got closer.
