This oral tradition passed down to me would challenge current paradigms; you or Mayanist scholars would dismiss. Was there any oral traditions passed down to you? I DON"T THINK SO!
What you speak is not Salvadoran history. There is no records stating that the Toltecs or Pipil killed off the Mayan people. It is well known among the Chorti and the Pokomam that the Nahuatl were trading partners for thousands of years, they began to settle in El Salvador until they intermingled. The greater part left not because of their warlike nature but because of the inability to harvest during does times.
This is the ORIGIN of the Pipil... They came from Toltec and Nahua groups. They spoke Nahuatl. THey settled..called the land Cuzcatlan...and called themselves....something else (I just call them Cuzcatlecs). WHen the Spanish came and brought MEXICAN translator...the Cuzcatlecs become known as the PIPIL which means "child" due to their very primitive Nahuatl dialect! THe Pipil were NOT completely assimilated with the Mayan. They still had their own culture.
When thy pipiles came to central america they originally setlled In Guatemala then gradually moved south east to El Salvador. Though there always remained some pipiles in Guatemala. The Mayans of the time and the pipiles both influenced each other. There are Many different Mayan groups, some where allies with the Pipiles and some were enemies.
