Apart from visually pleasing, art can just be interesting or thought provoking. Art doesn't need to look attractive to be stimulating. There is a world of different art out there, you don't have to like it or understand. Taste is taste, there aren't many rules.

Good art, IMO, plays on people's emotions. I do think that some stuff out there is pretty terrible but it's impossible to draw a valid line discerning art from stuff people made.
Twilight for example does mean a lot to some people. Just because I get nothing from it doesn't make someone else's response to it any less valid. I would argue that Twilight is art. One of the best things about discussing art is difference of opinion because that's when you get to have interesting conversations

Keep in mind that a lot of classic art is not pleasing to look at. It depicts pain, death, torture, misery, demons, the depths of hell, etc....
But, I agree about contemporary art, I'm not convinced they are not faking. The same is true of contemporary dance, it seems to me they are just making it up as they go along. It is not dance if it doesn't have some structure and discipline, and it is not art unless it has the same.

@StoryOfAPanic My farts are art.

I "liked" your video because I didn't have to pay for it...:)
Fine, fine contemporary art.

Yah, art is fukt. I tend to see Adam Sandler movies more as brain candy, and money making machines.
With contemporary art, the idea of it being disgusting lies within the heightened expectations of expecting something beautiful, coupled in with "greed" as the starting point of the creation. Paying to go see a potato on a lampshade for some is not the best use of money. They want to see REAL Brain Candy, and are therefore dissatisfied and disgusted with their experience.
Thanks for the video.

@frcharmouille Also to assume something will be automatically repetitive is close minded in a creative sense. Sure somethings things can be overdone, but to question what art has limitless possibilities. Finding a new way to look at art or trying to reconsider what art can be can bring original ideas and push the evolution of art. Its up to talent of the artist to avoid repetition.
-
@frcharmouille I wasn't implying that the sole purpose of art is to question what it is. Actually, the only purpose in art is to make whatever you want to make.
Good artists question and try to understand the form, medium and history of art. This informs their practice, and helps explore what their artwork can be. Artists can have any intention with the creative process. Some make art about art, paintings about paintings. Others can make work about everything else in life.

@paldoable If the very purpose of art is to question what art itself is, it's going to get pretty repetitive; and if an artist can only think about his own situation, people will lose interest after a while. Imagine a philosopher who only talks of philosophy, no-one would listen to him, because what he says doesn't concern anybody but him.

@fashobro88 Does being racist give you a giant mental orgasm or something? Because so far this video is full of interesting opinions and intelligent arguments -which is extremely rare on Youtube- and you spoiling everything is pretty frustrating.
Hi guys, thanks for the feedback! And thank you also for simultaneously proving me wrong and not being condescending!
