An improvisation using optical flow and fluid dynamics.

Webcam captures the audience.

The current and previous frames are used to deduct the optical flow field.
The optical flow describes the movement of each pixel over time.

This flow field is resampled to a lower resolution and low values of motion are discarded.

This is then used as input for a fluid dynamics simulation:
Where there is movement, the source pixel colors are sampled and used as density for the fluid simulation. The motion vectors of the flow field influence the fluid motion vectors.

The result was premiered during the WiredFestival (http://www.wiredfestival.net/) on the 4th of July 2009 on a 2.4 x 1.8m screen.

This work is still under development.

Written in java using some processing.org libraries.

  • Awesome. Could you possibly turn this into a screensaver for PC?

  • Actually with a bit of re-coding, i could! I'm going to look into that...
