In 2005 I played on singer Dejie Johnson's album. One of the tunes called for bari sax, and since I didn't have one I rented one for the session.

I fell in love with the sound so much, I had to have one! I mean, what ELSE makes a sound like this?? It's rockin'!

I love kicking bari around, especially in a horn section. It's marvelous to be on the bottom end of the sound, layin' back slightly behind the beat under all those horns. Move over, Lisa Simpson!

Much thanks to friend and mouthpiece luthier Will Grizzle, who created the custom mouthpiece on which I play.
And thanks to Scott Fugate, who did the camera work - and to the GBB!

  • i dont live in LA, but i am already getting privite lessons. I am also thinking of trying out for interlochens summer jazz program

  • @amysowell Awesome! Go for it!

  • I play the alto sax in the marching band at my school and the bari in the jazz band. the first time i played it the director told me to go and get it for practice one day. the first thing we played was a blues warm up song and the director and the bari player from the past two years told me i had a better sound the first time i played than both of them by the end of the year.

  • @amysowell AWESOME, amy! Where are you? If you are in LA, I'll be glad to give you a lesson. I have a small teaching and recording studio in LA. Give me your email and I'll email you more info.

  • Is it just me, or does he look like Malcom Tucker from "In The Loop"?

  • I love the bari <3

  • This is fantastic!

  • Cool. Keep playing. Just use a good harness, cause the bari is heavy. If you live in LA, stop by for a lesson. Keep up the good work, and don't forget to check out Gerry Mulligan, Serge Chaloff, Leo Parker, Nick Brignola, etc.

  • I love your vibrato. and your sound, you don't see many bari players with that type of talent anymore-coming from a sax player

  • Yes I think the sound is very nice. I think you are right about practicing.
