Why do people believe in conspiracy theories?

...a psychological and sociological exploration.

My own personal opiniions...

Due to time limitations, I had to shorten my introductory comments, which were:

"Yes, some conspiracies have existed:
The conspiracy to assassinate Julius Ceasar in 44 BC.
Watergate in the 1970s.
Iran Contra in the 80s.

And we recently learned that the Bush Administration lied, deceiving both Congress and the American people about the supposed "Weapons of Mass Destruction" in Iraq.
Is the war about Terrorism, our need for Oil, or our need to spread The American Way?"

Did you ever considered if the illuminati was too hard for you to deal with. you don't know what is going on. you are not there when they are making tv. you were not there with those guys in the airplane flew into the twin towers. now I dont say illuminati exists I also do not say the illuminati doesn't exist. @itsmedontusee 1. The Illuminati does not exist, in the sense of a group influencing world events.

2. I am a student of Television and Mass Media.

3. I have studied the events of 9/11, and I'm convinced by the evidence that there was no nefarious "controlled demolition." Essentially it was a failure of our intelligence gathering.

4. If you listened closely, I said these are some of the reasons SOME people believe this. Never said these were "psych problems" other than faulty reasoning.

@StevenErnest Good job Steve. The internet, and especially Youtube, has become inundated with all of this 911 conspiracy crap. From "No Planers" (I guess the plane I saw hit WTC 2 from 2 blocks away was a mind implant eh?) to "WTC 7 WHAT ABOUT WTC 7?" I've gotten quite sick of it all. It's nice to find another critical thinker out there keeping the actual truth and history from being re-written. If you don't know already, you should join the James Randi Educational Forum...covers everything.

@Oz1976 Perhaps the plane you saw was actually a missile? J/K! It is very moving that you were an actual witness. My main problem with the Truthers is that they are wasting time on fantasy fears, and not dealing with the complexity of current reality.

Yes, I'm registered on the wonderful Randi Forum website. I used them as a resource when I had to debate some people here early on.
