Lol! Lydia is a horrible follower. Every game has that one NPC that has terrible AI. Bots in left 4 dead, henchmen in Guild Wars. Well, Skyrim's is Lydia.

@DemNiggazClick yes. there is 1 housecarl for every hold capital. housecarls will follow you like lydia. other people will follow you once you complete favors for them. i recommend getting the skyrim guide though. makes everything less confusing and its got a section for everything including companions/housecarls/other people who follow you :D
