Recorded September 3, 2010. President Hayes is buried on the grounds of his Spiegel Grove estate, approximately 90 miles west of Cleveland. He is buried under a small memorial along with his wife Lucy and son. The site also includes the restored Hayes home which is open to visitors as well as the Hayes presidential library and museum. Hayes was interred in nearby Oakwood Cemetery following his death in 1893 but was reinterred at the estate in 1915 after the land was given to the state; the estate grounds have since been designated a national historic landmark. Hayes is one of five presidents laid to rest in Ohio, the others being James Garfield, William McKinley, Warren Harding and William Henry Harrison. Of the five, he is the only one to not die in office of natural causes or assassination.
