The only way to save Chavacano, Zamboanga City's pidgin Spanish language, is to teach and encourage young Zambuenos to speak it up with pride. Much as we admire the rise of many Chavacano-speaking page/groups in FB, we are alarmed seeing few young people joining in. As it is, Chavacano is in danger of dying with the older generation.
At the Kristiyano-Islam (Kris) Peace Library, we encourage all Kris scholars and library users to speak pure Chavacano. Watch how Joan Claire E. Pangan, who graduated valedictorian at the Manicahan Central Elementary School and an incoming fourth year high school student, speak the language with ease (again, apologies for the inverted video taken by our young staff). Joan wants to be a doctor.
If you love Chavacno, please join and support our effort to save and propagate the language which is part of our heritage and identity. Please email me at zamboyo66@yahoo.com to find out how you can help.
Buenas dias y mucho y mas gracias a todo!
