The Lake~Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) hosted a public workshop for TRANSPORTATION 2035. The room was filled by over 80 workshop attendees including members of the MPO Governing Board and its advisory committees, Elected Officials, City and County administrators and staff, state transportation agencies and other interested parties and local residents.
The purpose of the meeting was to seek input and guidance on draft goals and needs for the plan update. At the workshop, new data was presented from the first model run that was developed using the adopted land use scenario. Long term transportation issues were discussed.
Transportation facilities that need future improvements are based on forecasted travel patterns and anticipated points of congestion. The forecasted demand on the transportation system is based on estimates of future growth in population and jobs.
The Transportation 2035 Needs Assessment identified the roadway and transit improvements needed to resolve the regions most pressing problems for regional mobility and accessibility. The assessment takes into account the transportation facilities within the Lake~Sumter region which need to be accomplished by year 2035 to ensure reasonable transportation movement, while excluding those projects due to physical, policy, financial, and community constraints. The focus of the assessment is on the major transportation network, including roadways, pedestrians and bicyclists facilities including multi-use trails, passenger and freight rail service and fixed route transit services.
Federal regulations require MPOs to ensure that their long-range plans are cost affordable. This means that expected funding must be sufficient to cover all projected capital, operating and maintenance costs for the entire transportation system. This must encompass both existing and new facilities and services, through the year 2035.
We have begun assessing revenues that will be available to fund projects identified in Transportation 2035s Needs Plan. It is our goal to build a cost feasible plan on existing sources. We will also create an alternative cost feasible plan from examining scenarios of enhanced options. Please visit our website www.lakesumtermpo.com/2035 for more information.
