Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God
Why do all the narrators get the cadence wrong?
They all say, "Wheeled and soared and swung, high in the sumlite silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting winds along."
You can't hover and chase at the same time.
The line should be: "Wheeled and soared and swung, high in the sumlite silence...
Hovering there.
I've chased the shouting winds along."
Oh well. Still a fantastic, inspired poem.

to Jay Skulk, the original is on here. I remember trying to stay up late enough on weekends just to hear this sign off on the TV

Until I find the original one, this will do.
it still brings tears to my eyes. Our local TV station used to sign off at night with High flight,
I never flew a plane, but I was an air traffic controller at the busiest airports in the world for five years. Coming from the small town of Sedro wolly, I guess I made it pretty high.

That sounded like the High Flight film on the KABC-TV sign-off of 1982, except a little high in the key.

Oh my gosh, even though this is not the original video, I just closed my eyes and remembered so many years ago!!! My dad was stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam War and I so remember watching this sign-off and having it touch my soul EACH and every time. Thank you dbrunda!! God bless you!
