One more thing, I only made 2nd kyu at SKA, and I only attended one special training so I guess people in the group would say I don't really understand it but honestly, I didn't want to wait years and years to learn how to do some ground work and the boxing was very helpful for having experience with some full contact sparring.
But the basic punching I learned at SKA was helpful in boxing, but I had to learn to keep my hands up as I got hit too much with my hands down.

Marching up and down the floor doing basics, doing kata, and only doing mostly Ippon and Sanbon kumite for three years didn't really teach me to completely defend myself and neither did staying down low in my stances.
But although SKA gave me a good foundation for my strikes and kicks, it wasn't until I added judo training, did some amatuer boxing, and later trained in Kung Fu San Soo that I was well rounded enough. Training outside of SKA, it seems, is frown upon but I am glad I did.

Ken Osborne and Tom Muzila were my instructors at Shasta College for 3+ years.
I had the best teachers ever! Ken would tie me to his pitbulls and let them drag me for 5 miles! I will never forget him and all he has done for me, amd my face! Mike Knowles
