It is linear tracking. The auto record size detector is a small black lever that makes contact with a 12" record when started. It is located top middle, slightly left of platter. If not contacted, the system will assume it's a 7" record (45) on the platter.

@viking1au It's the Technics SL-6 that has automatic track selection, the SL-5 is the budget version of the SL-6.

Strange he had to eye it up to skip to another track. - I thought these things were supposed to sense it automatically.
