The issue regarding the straightness of back or waist gets back to the interpretation of Standing straight(立身中正)。Some masters insist that the spine has to be straight and to stay vertical to the ground. Some traditional Yang's master, like YSC, adopt a different theory. Spine can be straight when releasing the energy(發勁),but allow the flexibility for tail spine to extend forward(收尾履 提腰 吸丹田) when accumulating the energy or changing direction。Viewer can check YSC's student Ma Weihuan's video.
Ip Tai Tak who staid 29 years with YSC and Ginsoon Chu who worked about 4 years with YSC.
Chu King Hung has never been accepted as a true disciple by the Yang's. He was still in probation when YSC died in 1985. No picture of discipleship. After the death of YSC, he was authorized to use the title of disciple only for business reasons.
含胸拔背 is a way to soften the rear upper neck area. This teacher's neck stick out like a stiff pole. Regardness of his age, his neck is not correct for a taichi master. His dad got the same problem during the younger days, but his neck got much softened on his later year judging from photos.
I appologize for the mistake on his age, he did live to 75 years old.
He was not in 70s, I think that he died quite young. However, he was living in war time and practicing taichi would be difficult as one would have to live a day at a time to survive the harshness of Japanese armys and starvation.
Age has nothing to do with it. A good taichi practioner could maintain a flexible back til he died. Since I practiced taichi, my lowerback is much more flexible than I was thirty years ago. I am in my mid 50s.
