The consolidated PBY Catalina was, alongside the Short Sunderland, one of the key flying boats of the Second World War. It was used by the Allies in all theatres of conflict, from the Pacific to the Atlantic and had a range of over 2500 miles. This made the aircraft invaluable in its varied roles such as air-sea rescue and costal defence.
Britain received over 650 "Cats", which operated from bases such as Oban on the west coast of Scotland and it was a Catalina that located and shadowed the German battleship Bismark after the sinking of HMS Hood in May 1941.
The aircraft flying in thi video is a Canadian version of the Catalina, known as a Canso A.G-PBYA is owned by Plane Sailing Air Displays, who display their 'Cat' in wartime USAAF
8th Air Force colours.

Max Speed: 235mph
Max Height: 14,700ft
Range: 2545 miles

  • The announceer seems to have it wrong, its not a flying boat, those big fat wheels tucked into the side show its an amphib.. Also the title lists it as a Catalina, when its a Canadian built Canso. former RCAF plane. Too bad they painted it as an American and not in its true Canadian heritage colours. Canada and Empire saved Britains ass in WWI and !! and they paint it as a US plane!?!?.Too much Hollywood in the worlds history..,,sigh,,glad to see its still flying though

  • @JeanDupays1 hmm yeah :/ but when I type in "canadian catalina" into google images they all look like this?

  • @TheMarabouStork flying boat model has no wheels, Amphip is with wheels. Cda also built this US plane type but with some minor differences. Canadian models were called Canso. This particular craft is ex RCAF and is a Canadian Canso. Beautifully restored, but it was never in American service, so Im sad they`ve chosen to paint it in American colours and not more historically correct Canadian colours At least it is good hands

  • What a classic. Good video, thanks for posting.
