What size is that knitting needle?

The style of casting on demonstrated here has two major problems: (1) you have to estimate how much of a tail to leave when making your slip knot, and, (2) you are left with a "dead" edge once you've knitted on to the cast-on row. A dead edge is tight and unyielding to being picked up for further knitting.
A "living" cast-on row is achieved without having to estimate the amount of yarn needed if you use the "Knitted Cast-On" method. There are tutorials on youtube if you do a word search.
