20km ride on the streets and cycle ways of Edinburgh at rush hour.
The city is soon becoming cycle-friendly. Cyclists are allowed to share the buses' green lanes and there is an extensive network of traffic free cycle routes.
This time-lapse consists of set of 3260 pictures taken with a Canon Ixus 40 and a cheap camera mount for bicycles off of eBay. But the real magic was done by a little piece of software called CHDK that loads onto the camera's processor and is capable of executing user-written scripts. The script I used is very simple: just keep taking pictures as frequently as you can until the memory is full! Another nice touch is the setting of the shutter speed: With the speed of a bicycle, if the shutter is too slow, the pictures turns out blurry, so CHDK can put a limit, say 1/160. But if the scene is too dark (when passing under a bridge for example), the ISO value is raised.

  • I'd like to this sort of thing mixed with a GPS trail, if you did this on a phone why that wouldn't be possible.

  • @jambamkin I'm not quite sure what you mean. Yes, you can use a GPS mounted on the bike. Once at home, you download the track and display it on a map and attach it to the begining of the video.

  • Nice one:) how did u do this i mean what kind of camcorder do you have?

  • @memeczka It was a simple digital camera taking one picture every second. Later, I stitch them together in a video.

  • Could you message me the script you used? I'm planning on doing a timelapse of a 100 mile ride Aug 27th, 2011and have a timelapse script I'm already planning on using, but i'd like to compare the results of each script before hand. Thanks!
