Great video with solid tips. Re: joining PPA, I also recommend considering joining ASMP, the American Society of Media Photographers (disclaimer: I am a member and the VP of the Colorado Chapter). Both groups offer photographers access to a wealth of information related to the business of photography.

My photography work was in need of becoming more of a business and less of a hobby. I was pleased to find that episode 207 of your series of videos - that I love to watch during my daily breakfast - includes just the information to get me started. Great work!

What a horrible idea lol if you have to hire someone to copy them - then chances are you will not be able to duplicate their work.
Photographers you are paying for a creative eye and post processing, style, equipment and most of all problem solving.

i really like this video , well it seems that a photographer is more of a salesman / manger / contractor / etc ... not just shooting .Unfortunately in my country people think that any one with expensive camera is a photographer and whatever you charge is unfair :( , side question what program you used to make graphical stuff in this video ?

Thank you Mark, these are very good pointers but only cover the situation and laws in the US and meybe UK. I think many will agree that in some european countries it is slightly different. What do you do when the average monthly pay is 400-500$ and there are almost no regulations on licensing, people just torrent everything and now everybody is a photographer with software and "skills" so the value of your work drops.

what i would do is hire a photographer and video record the shoot. Then rent the equipment and just copy what he/she diid and use those pics, bypass the silly copyright.

tell your clients to send their payment to a tax haven which you have an account at. Bring in to the US only what you need and report those taxes; otherwise places like singapore and hong kong have not capital gains tax. Cost of doing business in the US is too expensive, even KBR pays their employees from Cayman Islands.
