Putting it into proper bowed fiddle playing! (see vibrato 1 and 2 on this channel before trying this!)
Hope this has helped a little. Just take it slowly and remember to keep relaxed and not allow tension or tightness. As soon as you feel this creeping in, stop and do something else for a while, then come back to it.

  • ...slowly slide down onto the shoulder, making sure it is not too far forward where it is uncomfortable on the collar bone. (about 75-80 degrees from the front facing position.) All the best!

  • Hi,

    I do know of some people that play without one, but you may find that it seriously limits the control you have over the instrument as you get more proficient. There are also different designs of chinrest and you may find that a flatter design or one that goes in a slightly different place might suit you better.

    Are you making sure that the violin is pointing more sidewards than frontwards? I get my beginner students to place the end of the violin on their left ear and then .....

  • I haven't got to the stage of being able to secure the violin between my shoulder and chin yet. How long does it usually take to get the hang of this? The chin rest diggs into my jaw, can I take it off?
