We chant for all manner of things. We believe that through chanting for our earthly desires (base desires) which all people have, we grow in wisdom. We get the things we want in a way that shows us what is ultimately truly important in our lives. Although we never stop having desires, through this practice we never stop directing our desires towards more altruistic and balanced outlets.

When we chant, we are revering the Buddha nature inherent in all life, in everything. We normally chant to a scroll which has written representations of protective/universal forces on it. This "Gohonzon" also displays the words Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo down the center with the name Nichiren after it. Nichiren was the monk who first chanted NMRK. This symbolizes that our lives are one with the cosmic life-force of the universe.
