There is no record of anyone ever being whipped in the 54th Ma. Flogging was illegal in the armies of both sides because it had been outlawed long before the secession crisis. The typical punishment for desertion was death.

The acting here is superb, but like the rest of the movie, historical accuracy has be shat upon to promote an alternative political and historical position...and more importantly, to make the people involved more money, and the truth doesn't sell as well.
