  • "what if criminals hire the police?"

    Why hire police when you can hire a politician? Police are just dumb enforcers and there are too many of them. Much more economical to buy up politician and have him pass the law you want and then have all policemen enforce it.

  • It's not as if criminal elements don't buy off cops today.

  • About the 'what if criminals hire the police' situation, his point could be strengthened with the why-people-cooperate, the benefits of trade, et al, and the conflict-is-costly arguments. Without those two things it would be impossible for civilization to exist and have mutually beneficial results.
