Actually, Henry VIII was said to be extremely good-looking and athletic. It was only after the jousting accident that he started to put on all that weight. The Tudors took some liberties with the historic timelines, casting younger actors, but having JRM play Henry isn't as farfetched as people think. I don't think Henry was ever as ridiculously good-looking as JRM, but he was handsome as a young man nonetheless.
