Remastered is referring to the remastering of the prints.

The did more than just update the FX. In fact that was a bit of a last minute decision. What they did was, they cleaned up the original prints and digitally repaired any tears in them.

The original buoy looked quite similar. The new one is slightly longer, more crystalline, and has more noticeable moving parts in the middle.
The bussards (front of the warp engines) on the original model had multi-colored, flashing christmas lights inside, underneath the rotating "cages" behind the translucent domes. Sadly, parts of the bussards were lost before the model was donated to the Smithsonian, and flashing red domes were put in their place when it was put on display.

Thanks for the post, since I can't afford to buy the remastered DVD sets. I thought that they also redid the faux Western town (?) The actress in this episode, Bonnie Beecher, also starred in a "Gunsmoke" two-parter where she was the girlfriend of a guy who was making nitroglycerin in a shack for some bank robbers.

'Remastered' is a misnomer. The visual effects have been updated. I think they've done a pretty good job of keeping the original feel of the series while using today's technology to make the effects seem more realistic. I can't wait to see this on my big screen TV.

That buoy looks incredible. What did it used to look like? Surely it didn't look like this... This effect seems to be to good to be 40 years old. Thanks for posting it! I had been wanting another look at it since I saw it a week or so ago on late night Los Angeles television, on Saturday night. PS - I don't remember the Enterprise's engines (if that's what they are) having colored lights moving inside either, back when I watched as a kid. The effects seem to have been substantially upgraded
