This Monday, Twitter released it's first ever transparency report. It revealed that just in the first six months of 2012, they've received more demands from governments for user data, than all of last year. And surprise, surprise, the United States made up the majority of the 849 requests, with a whopping 679. Alyona talks to Salon's Glenn Greenwald about the growing surveillance state and what can be done about it.

Good story. Russia Today (RT) and Press TV, are two great places for westerners to get real news of what's going on in our own countries. They give us more of the real picture than, any brain-dead state controlled western news agency. Any low brow western citizen who thinks that it's OK to have his or her state spying on him, needs an attitude adjustment from reality.

As Greenwald points out, the constitution was written to guarantee a transparent government and the privacy of the citizenry. Instead, it has been subverted and twisted so that citizens have no privacy while the government cloaks it's actions in secrecy. This is the perfect recipe for abuse of power.

In other words (as my other post here elaborates) this is why the government perpetually spies, it only serves the interest of a moneyed elite. Therefore it will spy to see if there is a significant threat to this elites dominance, it will do this so that it can further the interests of this elite which it solely serves. It will criminalize all dissent which is a real threat (like hacktivism), it wants to destroy any formidable dissent to the establishment of a moneyed few. We MUST resist.

I think the reason why people have trouble articulating why they are opposed to government surveillance activity is because they do not understand the REAL nature and function of their government. It is not hard to see that if you attack a wild animal it will fight back, that is its nature - how it functions. Government in the USA has been, is now and always will be if it is not dismantled a franchise of the moneyed elite. It solely serves this interest, therefore it spies on everyone.

to answer Alyona's second question about how government says they too need secrecy to carry out their experimentation, the government is not a private individual, the government is an elected body of representatives , everything they do is a service to the public, all their experimentations are should be done with public consent, the kinds of egregious acts the government commits today in secrecy are largely not done by the consensus of the public therefore it has no right to claim secrecy
