  • Thanks Bob. I was wondering if you could answer anather question for me. I have access to boxes and boxes of free processed grains in the form of kids cereals. Is there anyway to store these lond term (years). I saw your vids on Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers; is that enough? Will the cereal be dust when I open it? Thanks ~Rachel

  • well you could store them but since they are already processed they run the risk of not lasting as long as full grains. We have stored non mylared cerals for 2+ yrs, with zero issue. I wouldn't let it go past that as they really do start to degrade( taste/freshness). If you can or mylar it for all purposes it "could" last more than that. But i think there are better options out there. Read a lot of natural food cook books they will show you how to make cerals from whole grains rice, wheat etc.

  • Glad to see something worked as advertized even if the test wasn't 100% scientiffic. You guys are putting out some of the best food storage vids on U-tube; keep it up

  • Why it works...

Freezing bursts the cells of the eggs and the live bugs or weevils die from the freezing.

If you freeze the grains prior to storing you will have better luck. Remember, in MOST cases, the bugs/eggs are in the rice and grains when you buy it. They ARE NOT crawling into the grains afterwards.

Just wash the rice in warm water a few times and the dead or alive bugs will float to the top. The rice is still good.

    GREAT VIDEO delta69alpha !

  • Out of focus vids are so hard to watch. Especislly when it is the subject of the vid that I can't see.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I have JUST been getting into LT food storage and preparedness. I have heard very good tings about the freezing grains trick. I have had things going in and out of the freezer for the last couple weeks now! :-)

I have had issues in the past about thos edamn "grain bugs" getting mysteriously into things. Freezing everything has doen the trick. I freez ANYTHING grain that comes into the house, thought being, if there are eggs, I want them DEAD. :-)

  • Not that the idea of eating bugs thrills me, but would eating rice contaminated with bugs, dead or alive, be dangerous? Or is it just merely disgusting?

  • Another awesome video! Thanks. You guys have the best videos.

  • Couple of things, first, the square on the paper must have given the camera something to focus on, cause the bugs really showed up this time. Second, do we know the long term effect freezing has on the eggs? Third, when I was a Kid, ants would get into the dry dog food sometimes, mom would just freeze it and feed it back to fido. Said something about extra protein. Fourth, the little bugs really aren't that harmful to eat. They're corn/rice/wheat fed etc. Cooking kills them too. Yummy:)

  • What the hell kind of bugs are those anyways?

  • One other thing, freezing grains works great if you have a pet bird. I buy birdseed for my pet cockatiel in 25 pound sacks.

The sack of grain goes strait from the pet store, into the freezer, usually for a week or so. Zero problems with bugs by doing that.

  • You can also freeze any pre-packaged cake mix/corn bread mix/brownie mix, ect.

Will kill any bugs that might be lurking in them. Note: Do not freeze mixes like blueberry muffins that have the CAN of berries.
