All the Real English LESSONS begin here:
http://www.real-english.com/

There are 3 separate interviews in this clip. Instead of concentrating on the "How" of learning a Second Language, these people question the "Why", in the Spanish-speaking environment of south Florida.

This is the version with subtitles.
The same video WITHOUT subtitles is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uMeMChXpfE

Level: Upper Intermediate

Students of English: To improve your pronunciation, watch the version WITHOUT subtitles before reading the subtitled versions! Listen several times before reading.

  • 0:55 not true... at least not in most cases. The people who founded most of America were English, or had already spoken English... It's been a while since I've studied this topic, but I do know that when they came here, they made everyone else learn the English language.

  • @22Cat22 I agree but when she says "our ancestors" she is probably thinking like I do: my 4 grandparents arrived on Ellis Island as teens in 1914 and 1917. These are my "ancestors". The pilgrims are not really my ancestors. But it is certainly true that she is not open like her future son-in-law is.

  • haha the man is affraid of the women beside him ^0^ LMAO :p

  • The man in the video is engaged to be married to that lady's daughter. She is his future mother-in-law.

  • "If you live in this country you should speak English???" Tell that to an old woman living in the heart of Navajo Nation territory. Talk about "arrogant".

  • Right on, BaekYong313!!

  • @masteronyx you are right!

  • @trifulquita15 I speak Spanish fluently (i am native speaker), but I'm learning English now >.< i need help ^^

  • @BaekYong313 i don't know why the woman is disagree about the opinion of the man, he is right, the NORTH americans should learn others languages, not only the english, that is all what the man said.

  • all people should learn Spanish and English, the rest of language must disapear, sorry

  • Well first the americans should speak english correctly before to learn another language

  • I live in Canada. Actually I live in Quebec and here we are supposed to be functional (if not fluent) in both French and English.

So I speak my native language, which is Brazilian Portuguese, French and English.

Here we also have that kind of problem - people immigrating from other countries and who aren't able to speak neither French nor English, which is a very bad thing for them, since they tend to become "ghettoized" if you know what I mean.

  • I speak Swedish, German and English. I'm swedish by the way not american

  • @canvak I can't read your message!

  • Hi there, I wanted your permission to use the video in my EFL website. Because I want my students to focus on the first interview only, would that be ok if I posted only that part? I will not change anything there.

    Thanks, Adriane
