  • This is a latter day continuation of minstrelsy when whites donned blackface and strummed banjos. Urban whites were subconsciously looking backwards to a simpler time, their childhoods on the farms they came from. They projected this onto mock slaves--themselves--who are really children with their household chores and not slaves. It came at a time when white Americans were internalizing "white" as a race rather than separate cultures rooted in Europe.
