Women battle for equal rights in India's patriarchal societ

Indian woman may have been in the position of PM decades ago, but still their fight for equal treatment is only losing. Women are still seen as weak by the society, and needing the protection of men.

With the liberalization women got a bit better deal in the private companies, but the number always remained marginal. Their numbers are abysmal in the premier education institutes, and the customs of the society ensure that they are forced to end up as housewives.

In rural society, their chance of being on their own is next to impossible. Further, their treatment as slaves weaken them more. The customs are also against them, where women are always supposed to sacrifice, even to the extent of being hungry forever.

They are seen as a way of men's gratification, and are treated as mere products. Situation may have improved in last few years, but still a lot has to be done for women before they can become truly equal and free.
