In my pursuit of stories related to Oregon's plastic bag ban campaign I stopped by Sundance Natural Foods in Eugene, Oregon to talk with Renee Kempka. Sundance is one of a few select stores that consciously chooses not to offer plastic bags at the register. They offer paper bags but at an extra charge, similar to what the Plastic Bag Ban Coalition is proposing. For more information check out: http://ufolio.uoregon.edu/bhouck/

  • I worked in produce for this store in the mid-90's. I was a young heroin addict. They use to let you get money out of the register and they would deduct it from your paycheck. One time I withdrew my whole check plus $400. They asked me what happened and I confessed I was a heroin addict. Instead of firing me the owner gave me a raise, paid me my full check, and put me on insurance so I could get in to rehab. It wasn't that easy but almost 20 years later I am clean and will forever be grateful.
