@dbrauer43 Buck Rogers has no relation at all with Star Wars. On the other hand there are tons of references to Flash Gordon in Lucas´saga. Hoth is exactly like Frigia, Endor looks just like Arboria, Cloud City is Lucas´version of Hawkmen´s flying city, Naboo is a clone of Mingo City, even SW scrolling intro was lifted from FG Conquers The Universe´s intros. Not to speak about the parallels between both sagas characters.

@DachampsterStudios Lucas couldn´t get the rights of Flash Gordon cause Dino De Laurentis bought them first in 1974 in order to film the movie we knew in 1980, not due any imposition by King Features Syndicate (FG rights owner). If George Lucas could have bought the rights we probably never would have Star Wars. So, GRAZIE MILLE, DINO!

@labyronie In fact around those years West Germany TV produced a much better SF series than this called Raumpatruille Orion (Star Patrol Orion) that followed the same premise of Star Trek. Unfortunately it premiered the same week than ST and it fell into oblivion before the success of it´s american counterpart, despite it´s superb aestetics and script. If you search you can find all its 7 episodes here on Youtube.

@TheTubePortal If you like campy over the top almost parodic space opera with wonderful production but pre-Star Wars FX (a la Barbarella) you´ll love Flash Gordon 1980.

My Mom saw and told me she liked Flash Gordon. I already dig sci-fi. Taking in a few episodes of Flash Gordon suits me as a kind of time travel. I mean taking in this entertainment I can think about the world of imagination and dreams my Mom grew up in. If a person's interested in how society was, changes, and is, these old movies contain rich information on intended and unintended levels.
