This video was filmed by me during the Montreal (Quebec, Canada) EGL (elegant gothic lolita) meet-up in June 2009. EGL is a fashion style that was born in the 80's in Japan but inspired by the clothes young girls and boys wore during the french Victorian and Rococo era (18th century). Lolita fashion is NOT a costume. Most people who wear these clothes usually wear them on a daily basis and NOT only for special occasions. It's a style that is very popular in Japan (especially Tokyo and Osaka) and that is gaining popularity overseas. There's a fashion magazine called "Gothic & Lolita bible" originating from Japan that now has it's english version available in the US and Canada and you can find it at Kinokuya and various bookstores (such as Marché Clandestin in Montreal and l'Imaginaire in Quebec city, Canada).

  • will there be another meeting in montreal ? D:

  • @tifa2lock there are several meetings every year but as I don't live in Canada anymore I'm not really aware of when the meetings are... there is a forum called QC-Harajuku where you can find more info.

  • @jovenpendulem sooo tragic omg.

seriously, do you live in Japan? I do. And lots of lolita here look the same as the girls in Montreal. But you know, the point isn't to be copycats. Also did you know japanese girls wish to look like Europeans? Do you even know that lolita fashion is inspired by the Rococo and Victorian era..?!

Come on, educate yourself before leaving childish comments.

  • @getoutofmyband Actually I am. And my BF is japanese. And the girls in the video look nothing like a gothic lolita except for thier eek costumes. there is no thought in thier makeup or hair or attitude. Not all japanese girls wish to look european, wat does that have to do with anything? Yes i know what it is inspired by, what does that have to do with them not looking anything like a real lolita depic. but then again this is canada. I digress. ehp.

  • @jovenpendulem Are you a lolita yourself?

I'm asking because the people I hang out with in Tokyo and my friends in Montreal are pretty much the same. Not all lolitas have perfect make-up and not all of them live the "lolita lifestyle". And I mentioned the European thing because many of my friends keep saying "I wish I had white skin and blue eyes like yours, you can look like a real Victorian princess!". I'm not saying ALL japanese wish that..

  • @jovenpendulem and I've heard a lot of comments before like "Lolita doesn't look right on non-asian" so that's the main reason why I mentioned the European thing in the first place coz I thought that's what you meant by your first comment.

  • So many lolita~ ;A;

  • I'm Japanese but in my opinion, western people don't need to try hard to look good in wearing lolita fashion 'coz that's where the lolita fashion came from, from the west! Japanese people just popularized the said fashion and believe me they need to try hard enough for them to look good! nose jobs and circle lenses, anyone? :3

  • I would love to dress in elegant gothic aristocrat, but:

    1: I'm male.

2: I live in an area where no one usually wears them.

    3: I'm fat.

  • I love the style but back when I was single it used to always frustrate me to see the ones in pants, because I thought they were boys >.<

  • Wow there's so many people who leave dumb comments, even though they are old...WTF

  • @getoutofmyband Ah Okay :3 Thank you ^-^♥

  • @jovenpendulem You sound like such a fucking weeaboo. And a racist, just so you know.

  • Not being racist or anything, But I like American other cultures wearing lolita a tiny bit more then the japanese. Simply because it looks just as good. Japanese people look good in it too, but then they get the cocky Idea that only they can wear it :( im not saying all japanese are like that. But you know.
