The annual concert began on campus in 1988, when the Music Departments of St. Thomas and the College of St. Catherine were coordinated. Performances were held at both colleges. By 1993, the departments became independent of each other, and UST continued its concert with its own ensembles. That year the St. Thomas Alumni Association placed a small notice of the concert in one of its annual holiday mailings, and an extraordinary number of alumni called to request tickets. A performance was added. Two years later, still another was added. By 1997, demand was high enough for four performances. Today, if you have a ticket, you're a student, faculty or staff member at St. Thomas, or you are a lucky alumnus.
In 1996, a larger venue was tried for the concerts — St. Luke's Catholic Church on Summit Avenue — but sentiment was strong for returning the concerts to campus and to the chapel. Although many ticket requests continue to be turned down, audiences reported that they love coming to the concert at St. Thomas. The chapel's intimacy contributed to their enjoyment of the event.
