Did you buy the motor with the ECU?

pretty neat project, i would say to check your timing. Those engines should be set to 15 deg BTDC on the distributor with a timing light. your car is backfiring but the exhaust isnt hot or anything so it might be igniting from the spark while the exhaust valves are open.
