The role of NVA sappers was important during the war because the American troops called for air strike or artillery support every time when they saw threats coming at them when the threat was inherent. Air strikes cost NVA troops lots of casualties, in fact most of NVA deaths during the war was due to air strikes and artillery attacks. Also, to my lovely "comrade" sappers don't wear helmets but bonnie hats.
