Katherine Newman, the Malcolm Stevenson Forbes, Class of 1941 Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs of the Woodrow Wilson School and Director of the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies, is an expert on urban poverty, occupational mobility, and subjective dimensions of economic dislocation. She recently co-authored the book The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America (Beacon Press, 2007). In addition, Newman is working on the forthcoming book, tentatively titled "Brother's Keepers," which explores the history of public opionion of government intervention on behalf of the poor.
Prof. Newman sat down with the School's Office of External Affairs to discuss her current publications, the career pathways of low-wage workers, and the impact of tight labor markets on the working poor.
