Low birth rates, ageing populations, debt-laden economies and immigration -- the West consumes without consequence, loves without longevity and lives without meaning. Peak oil, climate change, the GFC is the world without. Decadence, a lush essay-style documentary filmed in eight countries, is about the world within, about us. About what we have gained and lost. About a new renaissance or a final dark age? You choose.

Pull your lame brain heads out of the sand and look at the realities. The west is losing influence. The naysayers should get out a little more. Decadence has been running for four weeks in cinemas in Australia and in peak Christmas season when blockbusters usually rule the screens. Plainly, there is a thinking audience for its content. Sorry Macanaut et al, you just don't get it.

A sickening film. Viswalingam's a disgraceful man w/ no respect 4 political, economic, or cultural theory (bar a couple of all too brief appearances by Chomsky). The presentation is boring, incoherent, & inartistic. The values upheld can be characterized as politically centrist, socially conservative (i.e. Christian), & historically ignorant. Even lauding boarding school. So, if you're thing is watching washed-up journalists pontificate inanely while on holiday, then this "essay film" is 4 you.

while I agree with a large amount (not all) of what was said in this documentary, there is absolutely nothing new offered by it. more than than, what it does say covers such a vast swathe of issues, and is so poorly hung together that I was quick to lose interest. not to mention the production values - any text looks like it was made on microsoft word art, and the visuals quickly become meaningless - it looks like stock footage, or a karaoke video. poorly researched, lazy, and ultimately boring

At the end of the movie, the shows host looks into the camera with an arrogant smirk and announces that the things the western world has "are going, going, ........."

This movie seems more like a vehicle for the non western host and director to take a swipe at us.

Save ur money folks. This movie was just a boring bag of borrowed opinions, with few stats, and far less balance. "30% of american couples dont have sex". No stats offered for non american/western countries. Just one example of how loosely put together this film is. Couldnt wait for it to end. 1 star out of 5. My lowest ever rating.

I think the problem lies mainly in the decadence of the few over the impoverishment of the many and the trampling of democracy to the point where there is nothing we can do about it anymore, except wait for the whole corrupt system to collapse on us, at which point perhaps there would be a bloody revolution? who knows?

Sorry, that´s just false, there is no stable balance of power in it. The multipolar first half of the 20th c. was way more violent than the second half, which was bipolar.

Islam is a different kind of religion, it´s a political entity. The middle eastern culture didn´t know the concept of territorial nation states, europeans brought it there. Religious communites ARE the traditional nations in the orient. Judaism = nation, Islam = nation. Eastern christendom = nation and so on
