Elmore James (January 27, 1918 -- May 24, 1963) was an American blues guitarist, singer, song writer and band leader. He was known as The King of the Slide Guitar and had a unique guitar style and stirring voice.

His song "It hurts me too" has been covered by many great musicians, like Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry.

    Quite true. He took Tampa Red's completely forgettable rendition (my opinion) and made it a classic. That's why all subsequent covers are trying to sound like Elmore not Tampa Red.
