Ilir Shaqiri - Arvanite

The arvanites were mainly highlanders and farmers. Some say they came to Greece in the 6 and 7AD. But the majority probably came during the XI, XII and XIII centuries. It was a time when Greece was under a bad economic and military shape, entire regions were de-populated due to diseases, wars, starvings etc and those regions became home to rebels, thieves etc.

The princes of Greece, greeks, franks and catalans invited albanian clans to settle in those regions to Greece´s situation. They settled mainly in Beotia, Attica, the Peloponnesse. Some settled also in the isles like Hydra, Specia, even Crete and Cyprus. There is even one document on colonies by albanian settlements in Cyprus, mainly mercenaries and their leaders like Aleksander Gabriera!

The albanians played an important role in Greece. Many of it´s princes like Leon Sguro were arvanites. The defender of Athens, Dhimitër Rendi (the heavy) was an arvanites! Then we have prince Thedor Bohala. When the turks arrived, the arvanites defended Greece with bravery. One example is Pavlo Bua Sklepa. After beeing defeated, the turks cut of the heads of 800 arvanites making a pyramide to revenge.

Then we have plenty others, Centurion Zaharia, Dhoskë the albanian, Dushi, Korkondil Kladha etc. They fought the enemies along the greeks and venetians. As a result, many of the arvanites fled to Italy due to the reprisals, they have many songs about Moréa etc.

Those whom stayed continued to fight. It is even said majority of the armatoles, klephtes were arvanites. Famous rebels like Nikochara, Thimi Bllahava, Pano Mejdani, Sulo Proshova, Kico Bocari, Veli Gjeka, Tafil Buzi, Beqir Xhokadora, Dhimitër Tochka were all arvanites and albanians from Albania prior!

When the independence war broke out, the arvanites were among the first to fight. Laskarina Bumbulina, Theodor Kollokotroni (Bythguri), Jorgos Karaiskakis, Odhisea Andruco, Thanas Dhjako, Marko Bocari, Foto Xhavella, Konstantin Kanari, Andrea Miauli etc were all of albanian origin, some partially!

The arvanites have also contributed in arts etc, Aleksandër Pali (Aleksandros Pavlos) was arvanites, so was Gjiza, Sotir Skipi, Vasil Rota, Kakërdhiu, Vretaku, Bogri, Cifori, Mateshi, Thisbi and Dhoksaraj!

The first president/minister Ioannis Kapodistrias (Gjon Kapodistria) was an albanian from Gjirokastra, Later they emigrated to Corfu and later Gjoni became prime-minister.
Admiral Koundouriotis was also arvanites, famous for sometimes giving orders in arvanitika!

The arvanites have through the corse of time played in Greece. The documents speak of 150,000 arvanites during the mediaeval era and these are only the ones documented, but many werent documented. This figure was very high for that time taking in consider it´s increase. The albanians continued to settle in Greece even after the mediaeval era, especially in Macedonia. The entire region to the west of Krushevo became inhabited by albanians! There was even albanian orthodox churches built in Agio Oros!

  • beautiful song, one may sense the heroic history you albanians have, even if i don´t understand one word!

    Greetings from Sweden

  • @oropios Their albanian names are enough to tell that they are albanians. Their names ONLY mean something in albanian. But, it's typical for greeks to change everything. If their names sounded greek, you would consider that as the best fact for their greek origin. Plus, EVERYONE killed each other back then, as soon as some worked with/for turks. That is nothing new.
