Mark is almost 10 years old and has a frontal lisp (distorts his "s" sound) and also frequently says "s" for "z." The speech language pathologist, commonly known as a speech therapist, helps Mark make initial strides to reduce his lisp. For approximately 3 sessions, Mark places his fingers around his mouth to help him become aware of his lisping. Mark internalizes this strategy and later no longer needs to place his fingers around his lips. When Mark terminates speech therapy, a follow-up video will demonstrate his progress. Please note that treatment varies for a lisp. What may work for Mark in this video, may not work for another individual with a lisp. Contact your local speech language pathologist.

  • Like any therapy, a professional individualizes the treatment based on the individual's needs. What may work for one person, may not work for another person: a one size fits all approach is never effective. If you are concerned about a lisp, please consult a licensed speech language pathologist.

  • I'm 15, and when I was young I didn't have my two front teeth while I was pretty much learning to speak.. I've had a lisp for a while, I still have a problem keeping my tongue behind my teeth.. Is my tongue supposed to stay on the top or bottom of my mouth when trying to pronounce S. Is there any other way to help my lisp?

  • @LilGamer99

    Hi,

/S/ can be properly articulated in 2 different ways:

    1) Tongue tip down behind the lower front teeth

    2) Tongue tip up behind the upper front teeth

One way should be more comfortable for you.

A lisp may be produced if you say /s/ and your:

    1) Tongue tip is between the teeth

    2) Tongue blade (part of the top of the tongue right behind the tongue tip) is used instead of the tongue tip

    3) Air flows over the sides of the tongue instead of over the top of the tongue.

  • He's a pretty awesome story teller!!
