After SMB3 and SMW, Bowser's children learned that surrendering is less painful then getting tossed into whatever hellish limbo they disappear into. They surrender, Mario takes them as prisoners of the Mushroom Kingdom, and that's why they were never seen again. There, I applied logic and continuity to a Mario game.

I even LP'ed a romhack, so I know that pretty well. But in exchange I played a Yoshi's Island hack which builds up aggressions against Mario. So I would actually prefer if you can point your gun at Mario's head. :p
