Christ In Action deployed to North Carolina, as the eye of Hurricane Irene passed through the Outer Banks, making landfall on August 27, 2011. About 40 people died and 9 million were left without power due to Irene's fierce winds and rains. 2.3 million people were under mandatory evacuation orders, yet many chose to weather the storm. The road to Hatteras Island (NC-12) (as well as the main power line) was breached in seven places--literally washed away--making ground transportation impossible.

Having already reached out to local emergency officials and faith-based leadership networks, Christ In Action setup in Kitty Hawk, NC, and were able to reach out to hundreds of people in the surrounding communities, including Manteo, Wanchese, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Southern Shores, Poplar Branch, Nags Head, Stumpy Point, Harbinger and Currituck. Focused on tree and debris removal, CIA was also able to help gut flooded homes, clear sand and sea grass, and really experience communities and the Body of Christ pulling together to strengthen their resolve through crisis. Volunteers came from the local area as well as Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas, Maryland and Alabama, to serve and bring hope to those who were hurting.
