We did this in science today, AND 30% hydrogen peroxide & Manganese Dioxide with fire :D

@digimonsters No, but you need to do this in a lab setting. The reaction itself is not dangerous, but sulfuric acid is.
-
the gas being released is actually water and nope, it's not toxic lol
;)

Now you got carbon ,
C12H22O11(s)+H2SO4(aq) ----> 12C + 11H2O
column of carbon rises and steam of sulfur dioxide. Don't breathe it in and look up things you can do with it xD

have fun breathing your toxic fumes

Very cool, thanks. I will check that out.

@1991SZA Thanks for clarifying that - I should have included this equation in the video to begin with.

I'm relatively new to chemistry, so please bear with my question.
Now that the acid and sugar have been added together, it has produced carbon and water vapor. What can you do with the carbon now?

As far as I know, nothing. The point is just to observe the chemical reaction that takes places between H2SO4 and sugar. If you Google this lab, you will find quite a few websites that describe the process taking place. As with most labs of this nature, you should familiarize yourself with sulfuric, hydrochloric, and other acids that are used as common catalysts. One lab that you might find particularly interesting is making aspirin. It is a bit more in-depth, however.
